In a virtual PPA (aka ‘financial PPA’), the renewables project where the power is supplied and the client is located do not need to be in the same electric power system, nor physically connected. The contract guarantees that ACCIONA supplies a certain amount of renewable electricity to a particular power grid, equivalent to that contracted with the client in another system. The price differences between the PPA and the wholesale market where each point of consumption is located is offset through formulas such as a Contract for Differences (CFD).
This is a good solution for clients with several charge points, meaning that a renewables project can virtually supply a number of points of consumption located in the same or different electric power systems.
All the electricity supplied by ACCIONA Energía is certified 100% renewable in the markets where this is possible. In Spain, for example, through the guarantees of origin issued by the Competition and Markets Authority. In any case, whether there is an official certification system or not, ACCIONA has developed its own platform called Greenchain®, based on blockchain technology, which certifies the traceability of each kilowatt-hour supplied in real time, from the renewables plant that produces the electricity to the point of consumption.

The main advantage of a PPA is the certainty it gives the client about the price of its electricity supplies over a long period of time, usually around 10 years. Furthermore, this type of contract means that very competitive terms can be negotiated, usually associated with the construction of new renewable facilities. This facilitates their integration into a company’s sustainability and decarbonization policies, which in turn facilitates compliance with ESG objectives and improves corporate reputation.

The basic difference lies in the contract term. Short-term supply establishes a certain price and conditions for a period that usually lasts between one and two years. A PPA (power purchase agreement) is a more complex contract that covers the price and supply conditions for a period of around 10 years on average. The latter is particularly suitable for clients seeking greater certainty about the price of the electricity with a view to planning their cost structure over a longer period of time.
In ACCIONA we make a detailed study of all our clients to see if the sites and resources available are suitable for the installation of a self-consumption system. Some of the variables we take into account are:
- The size, inclination and orientation of surfaces in the case of rooftop PV.
- Structural studies of rooftops where solar panels are to be located on them.
- Location of space available on the company’s premises, or on adjacent land, for the installation of wind and solar power systems.
- A study of the solar and wind resources in the area by an expert team from ACCIONA Energía, including the study of possible shadows from trees, nearby buildings, etc. in the case of solar energy.

Acciona has the biggest renewable energies control centre in the world, providing 24/7 monitoring of all generation plants and carrying out actions to correct any failures that may occur. If it is necessary to carry out a particular task in your plant, ACCIONA will bear the associated operation and maintenance costs.
ACCIONA has considerable experience in managing subsidies. It has a dedicated team that locates and administers the subsidies that are applied to each case.
Given that ACCIONA’s contracts are long-term, the company allows the subrogation of a contract to a third party, following a credit risk analysis of the new owner.
Energy not consumed can be sold to the grid provided that you have a self-consumption system with surplus production and a connection point. ACCIONA Energía undertakes the administrative arrangements and the representation of the energy sold in the market.
Yes. ACCIONA Energía undertakes to generate a minimum saving for the duration of the contract without reducing present service levels. The procedure would be as follows::
- – Get to know all the present energy flows through an in-depth energy audit.
- – Identify the technologies in the market that are best applied to your centre’s activity.
- – Draw up an action plan with specific measures, setting targets for energy saving and decarbonization.
- – Development and implementation of the action plan.
Once the plan is implemented, ACCIONA Energía takes on the management of the project to guarantee the objectives set in the plan.
Naturally, O&M is included in the service. Carrying out the project management and ensuring that savings targets are met is a key point. ACCIONA Energía undertakes to achieve the savings targets and guarantee a level of service, covering all the tasks required in the maintenance of the facility.

Once the Action Plan is agreed between the two parties, ACCIONA undertakes to make investments that will be recovered through the savings generated. It should be borne in mind that any saving in Energy Services has a return, so part of the savings are used to amortize the investments, leaving the rest in the client’s cash flow.
This way, the client does not bear the cost of the investment but shares a percentage of the savings, and is left with 100% once the contract has expired.
